Located in the KwaZulu-Natal hills is the wildlife conservancy of Tala Private Game Reserve, an area of indigenous acacia thornveld, open grassland and sensitive wetland that provides an exceptional environment in which to game and bird watch.


Tala provides visitors with superb game viewing experiences in open game vehicles with highly knowledgeable and experienced rangers and a tracker who will not fail to impress you with his bush skills. At Tala the aim is to get you close to nature, interacting with the environment and animals, and experiencing the sights, sounds and smells of the African bush.


The reserve, that spans nearly 7,500 acres (3,000 hectares) and incorporates many diverse natural environments, features well over 300 bird species, with big game that includes rhino, kudu, hippo, giraffe and the rare sable antelope. Several distinctive and remarkable plant species are also found on Tala.The fiery aloe in full bloom, the imposing euphorbia and the smell of the fragrant wild sage on a dewy morning make for wonderful vivid memories.


Upon your arrival at the Tala Game Reserve Lodge, enjoy refreshments followed by your exciting two-hour open vehicle game drive in addition to. Have your camera ready for this exhilarating look at Tala's wildlife.


Please note: The roads in the game reserve are gravel, there are inclines and certain parts of the game-drive are bumpy. Therefore, this tour is not suitable for guests with back problems, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are not permitted to use cellular phones on or during the game drives. Guests are also not permitted to speak loudly or stand up on the game drive vehicles, as this will disturb the animals. Smoking is not permitted during the game-drives. For safety reasons, children under the age of 6 are not allowed in the open vehicles. The spotting of wildlife cannot be guaranteed. Comfortable clothing, a windbreaker, binoculars and a sun hat are strongly recommended. There is a small Curio Shop at Tala. Please note that cash is not accepted on the premises. Guests may only pay for purchases with a credit card. Tala Private Game Reserve is amidst an area that is populated and may not feel as though it is deep within the African Bush. This is not a big 5 destination. Guests participating in this programme will return to the ship too late to enjoy lunch in La Terrazza or The Restaurant. Room service or the Pool Bar & Grill are available for late lunch options.
