Excursion Aoshima & udo shrine tour at Aburatsu
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Experience a pair of the most revered and iconic monuments in south-eastern Japan during this picturesque, half-day excursion to the Aoshima and Udo shrines.
Aburatsu, Miyazaki, Aoshima Island & Shrine, Beautiful Beaches, Rock Formations, Verdant Jungle
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 55-minute drive to Aoshima Island, situated off the coast of Miyazaki. Beautiful beaches, unusual rock formations known as 'Onino Sentakuita' (the Devil's Washboard) and verdant jungle vegetation surround the island, designated as a National Natural Monument. Upon arrival, a visit is made to the island's only structure, the Aoshima Shrine; believed to offer a blessing for couples in love. The origins of the shrine are not known, but it is believed to have been in existence since the 9th-century Heian Period. After centuries of restricted access, the shrine was finally opened to the public in 1737.
Udo Shrine, Cliffside Cave and Spectacular Ocean Views
Following your visit, re-board your coach and continue on for a visit to the Udo Shrine. Dedicated to Yamasachihiko, the father of Emperor Jimmu, mythical first emperor of Japan, this fascinating shrine is set in a cave that clings to the side of a cliff and is famed for its dramatic locale. After exploring the interior of the shrine, step outside onto the terrace for spectacular views of the ocean. According to myth, the rocks that surround the cave nourished Emperor Jimmu when he was a baby. Today, women drink the water that flows between the rocks to increase fertility and ease childbirth. This spot is also thought to be a lucky place for young couples.
Taffy and Clay Target Discs for Sale
Taffy made from this water is available for purchase, as are small clay discs that are thrown at a target between the peaks of a nearby island for good luck. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach for the short drive back to the pier.
