Excursion Bird watching to lake karmali and adjoining forest tour at Mormugao
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Enjoy a morning of birdwatching at Karmali Lake, well-known for birding in Goa, and hiking through the adjoining tropical forest.
Embark on your adventure (5.25 hours) from the pier and board your coach for the one-hour drive to the village of Karmali, also known as Carambolim or, to the locals, Kormbolle. Arrive at the small village located about seven miles from Panjim and visit the bird sanctuary of Karmali Lake.
Walk along the boardwalk and take advantage of the birding stations and towers. Witness the variety of avian life at the lake, a manmade body of freshwater originally built for irrigation of the nearby rice paddy fields. Have your binoculars and camera ready, because the lake provides rich habitat for many migratory and resident water birds. Keep your eyes open for waterfowl, egrets, jacanas, moorhens, herons, pintails, open-billed storks, lesser whistling teals, shovelers, garganeys and coots. Hike through the forest of indigenous trees where you may see a Jungle Owlet or Brown Hawk Owl. Snacks and refreshments will be served during the tour.
Reboard your coach for the drive back to the pier.
