Excursion Valdivia by land and river tour at Niebla
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Experience one of Chile's most beautiful cities by boat and on foot. The excursion starts at the landing stage of Niebla, sailing up the Valdivia River on a boat for some 16 kilometers until reaching the city's pier.
You will have a chance to try some local food during your ride. Pass by Mancera Island, fortified by the Spaniards in 1645 and today a summer residence, and also sail past Gran Isla del Rey, the largest island on the Valdivia River. As you sail beyond Haverbeck Island glimpse the old mansions and shipyards of Valdivia.
Arrive at the Schuster pier in Valdivia, and walk to the picturesque riverside market, with its stalls of local fish, fruits, vegetables and other regional products on display. It is easy to spot playful sea lions, who linger next to the market while it is open in hopes of some food from a generous passerby. Stroll around the market and up to the main square, just 3 blocks away from the pier. Visit the modern Cathedral and its museum, both located in front of the square.
Walk across the bridge to Maurice Van der Maele Historical and Anthropological Museum, housing a large collection of Mapuche artifacts and jewelry, as well as important pieces from the Hispanic and German periods. Feel the German influence on Valdivia in every corner of this city. Make the return trip to the pier.
