Excursion Art of the japanese brush tour at Hiroshima

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Explore the history, production, and uses of the renowned Kumano brushes during this immersive, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Hiroshima, Kumano

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive to the town of Kumano, where approximately 80% of the brushes made in Japan are still made by hand from animal fur. Years ago, Kumano rose to prominence in the brush-making industry when it was encouraged by Hiroshima officials to produce the brushes to supplement its local farming economy. Later, Japanese calligraphy was introduced as a school subject, and the increased demand for brushes bolstered the industry in Kumano.

Fudenosato Kobo Museum, Guided Tour, Exhibits

Upon arrival at Kumano, proceed for a visit to the Fudenosato Kobo Museum. The museum plays a central role in presenting the history, various uses, and distinct characteristics that go into these renowned brushes, which have a variety of uses that include painting, writing, and calligraphy. Following a guided walking tour of this captivating museum and its exhibits, you are invited to try your hand at utilising the Kumano brushes yourself during an interactive drawing activity.

Interactive Drawing Activity, Hanging Scroll, Kumanofude, Shopping, Souvenirs, Brushes

On a large, white sheet of traditional Japanese paper, you can draw words or anything that inspires you. After completing your art, the paper is made into a hanging scroll that you can bring home with you to utilise as a decoration. Before you leave, some free time is made available for shopping at Kumanofude, the museum’s store, which offers a selection of more than 1,500 types of fude (brushes). At the conclusion of your tour, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 45-minue drive back to the pier.

After the tour, guests have the option to return to Ujina Port or disembark at the Peace Memorial Park.

Note

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.3 miles (about 0.5 kilometres), at times over uneven surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 12 steps at the Fudenosato Kobo Museum. Walking at the Fudenosato Kobo Museum is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection, a sweater or light jacket, bottled water, and Japanese Yen or credit cards for purchases from the ship. Although credit cards are mostly accepted, Japanese yen is required for any purchases; guests are advised to exchange money at the airport prior to the cruise. Proper attire is required to enter temples and shrines; shorts and bare shoulders are not permitted. Guests must be at least 12 years old to participate on this tour; minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 18 years old. Guests must be at least 20 years old to be served alcoholic beverages. Infrastructure in Hiroshima may be basic, and local conditions may be challenging; coaches, guides, hotels, restaurants, equipment, and services are the best-available in the area, but may not be up to the standards of those found on other ports. Therefore, we urge flexibility and understanding as we visit unique, less-touristic destinations. The cost of providing a tour programme in this area is proportionately more expensive than in neighbouring regions, as vehicles and guides are brought in from the whole region. This may be reflected in the prices of the tours, and we thank you for your understanding. Expect crowds and long lines at the sites visited. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions. The tour sequence may vary. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.
