Explore the history and traditions of Kagoshima during this memorable, half-day excursion to the historic Samurai Houses at Chiran and tour a museum dedicated to World War II kamikaze pilots.
Satsuma Peninsula & Chiran Samurai House
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 50-minute drive along the Satsuma Peninsula. Along the way, an exterior visit is made at the Chiran Samurai House. During Japan's Feudal Era, Chiran was a stronghold of the Shimazu Samurai. During your visit, take a guided stroll down a street lined with well-preserved Samurai houses (exterior view) and their gardens.
Kamikaze Museum
Next, re-board your coach for the drive to the Kamikaze Museum. During World War II, the Chiran Air Base was home to Japan's Kamikaze squadrons. Visit the museum at your leisure. See the Tokko Heiwa Kaikan and its comprehensive collection of aircraft, models, mementoes and photographs of the Special Attack Corps. Please note that some signage is in Japanese only. Guide will provide necessary explanation before entering the museum.
Following your visit, commence the approximate one-hour drive back to the pier.

This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.7 miles (1.126 metres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and at the Samurai House's garden. It is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing, and bring sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses from the ship. This tour includes sensitive material, including graphic pictures and displays of the atrocities of war. No photograph at Kamikaze museum. The tour sequence may vary. Japanese yen is required for any purchases: guests are advised to exchange money at the airport prior the cruise. Local Tour Guides tend to have a strong accent therefore we urge flexibility.
