Elmastukwek is the Mi’kmaw name for “going away from the river.” Begin your journey to discover Elmastukwek history and culture. Elmastukwek First Nation belongs to the wider Mi'kmaw nation known as Mi'kma'ki, which stretches from all the Atlantic provinces (Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island) to the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec, and down as far as Maine, USA.
You’ll travel along the horseshoe-shaped Bay of Islands with a brief stop at Crow Gulch, where our guide will share insights into the challenges faced by the Mi’kmaw community that once thrived and will encourage reflection on the social legacy and the importance of acknowledging difficult histories.
Visit the vibrant mural “Wjipiskl” by Chief Jenny Brake of Qalipu First Nation which represents Indigenous roots and its connection to Newfoundland communities, past, present and future.
Now time for some socializing as we come together to enjoy a delightful culinary experience, and savour unique flavours featuring local delicacies including moose tacos, smoked Arctic Charr, and local seafood (in season), such as cod, mussels and crab. Learn about traditional preparation methods and cultural connections.
Share your own reflections and experiences as we return to the starting point of our journey.
