Excursion Island highlights st. helena tour at St Helena
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Learn why St. Helena is described as the most extraordinary place on earth as you take a roving tour of St. Helena to experience the beauty and important history of this small but fascinating island. See key historic landmarks and observe the diverse contrasts in scenery as this tour takes you from rugged coastlines through to lush green countryside, with interesting and exciting points of history around every corner.
Travel through the island's capital with its Georgian feel, following the path of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte when he first stepped ashore in 1815. A picturesque stop at Two Gun Saddle boasts views of the Heart Shaped Waterfall, High Knoll Fort, a historic fortification built in the 1800s to protect the island and the island's capital Jamestown nestled in the valley.
A short drive then takes you on to the entrance of Napoleon's Tomb, an extremely scenic and tranquil spot and chosen by the French Emperor for those very reasons. The body was removed from this site in 1840 and returned to France. A short walk is required in order to reach the exact site of the grave.
Next, stop at Longwood House, the last place of residence taken by Napoleon and now recognized as one of the most iconic Napoleonic museums in the world. Departing Longwood, pause for pictures at Stitches Ridge overlooking Sandy Bay, which offers stunning geographical landscapes and views of prominent volcanic dykes.
Travel onward to Plantation Grounds, which surround the Governor's residence and serve as home to the island's oldest inhabitant Jonathan the tortoise (as well as several other tortoises). Spend a few minutes here taking in the features of another historic building (the Governor's house) built in 1792 and with luck visitors can catch a glimpse of these magnificent animals.
The final stop of this whirlwind tour is Ladder Hill, one of the island's seven wonders. Built in 1829 as an incline plane to haul manure and provisions from the town to the top of the hill, Jacob's Ladder comprises 699 steps embedded into the steep cliff face. Ladder Hill also offers an excellent photo opportunity to see your cruise vessel anchored in James Bay.
Please note: This tour includes a hike to Napoleon's tomb that is across a slight incline, making it difficult for those with walking or mobility issues. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection and a light jacket from the ship. Flash and video photography is not permitted at Napoleon House.
