Excursion Mount etna: monti sartorius volcano hike tour at Giardini-Naxos

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Journey to the northern slopes of Mount Etna, Europe’s highest active volcano, for a guided hike through one of Sicily’s most distinctive volcanic landscapes. Travelling inland from the coast, reach the Monti Sartorius area, known for its series of dormant craters set within a striking natural environment shaped by past eruptions.

Accompanied by a naturalist guide, walk along forested trails that wind between volcanic cones, lava formations, and contrasting vegetation. Pine forests and endemic plant life have gradually reclaimed parts of the terrain, creating a unique mix of barren lava fields and green growth.

As you explore the area, learn about Etna’s geological activity, the history of its eruptions, and the way the landscape continues to evolve. The route offers wide views across the surrounding countryside and, on clear days, toward the coastline and beyond.

This experience provides a deeper understanding of Mount Etna’s natural dynamics through a scenic and accessible hike on its quieter northern side.

Note

Please note: This experience includes approximately 1.9–2.5 miles (3–4 km) of walking on volcanic terrain, including uneven ground, loose gravel, and gentle inclines. Guests should be in good physical condition and comfortable walking on natural trails. Sturdy walking shoes are essential. Weather conditions on Mount Etna can change quickly, and temperatures may be cooler than on the coast; layered clothing, sun protection, and water are strongly recommended. The drive to and from the hike area is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes each way. The itinerary may vary depending on weather and volcanic conditions.
