Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Explore the ancient treasures of the 'Temple of the Great Kings' during this immersive, half-day sightseeing excursion to the Mulkirigala Temple.
Hambantota, Mulkirigala Temple, Panoramic Countryside Views
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 75-minute drive to the Mulkirigala Raja Maha Vihara, the 'Temple of the Great Kings'. Upon arrival, take a guided, archaeological, and spiritual journey through this legendary Buddhist temple, which dates from the 3rd century B.C. Your well-rewarded ascent of approximately 550 steps leads to this exquisite site. Located approximately 676 feet (about 206 metres) above ground level, it offers spectacular panoramic views of the countryside.
Rock Temples, Ancient Viharas, Terraced Levels, Cleft-Like Caves
Known as the Rock Temples of Mulkirigala, this ancient collection of viharas and Buddha statues rises from the surrounding forest of coconut trees in stunning fashion. These temples are priceless storehouses of literature and history. The manuscripts found here in 1826 were utilised for the first translation of the Mahāvaṃsa (Great Chronicle), which unlocked Sri Lanka's early history. The most extraordinary features of the temple are its seven cleft-like caves, which extend across five terraced levels.
Iconic Buddha Statues, Figures, Buddha Text Etchings, Wall Paintings, Frescoes
View a number of iconic Buddha statues interspersed with various figures housed inside these caves. In addition, see ancient Buddha texts etched on the walls and some fascinating wall paintings depicting sinners pleasuring themselves with the forbidden fruit on earth, then paying for it with an afterlife of eternal torture. Finally, view the exquisite and vibrant frescoes that tell the ancient stories of Jataka, known as the 'Jataka Tales'. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 75-minute drive back to the pier.

Infrastructure in Hambantota is basic, and local conditions may be challenging; therefore, we urge flexibility and understanding as we visit unique and somewhat remote destinations. The cost of providing a tour programme in Sri Lanka is proportionately more expensive than in neighbouring nations. Unfortunately, this is reflected in the prices of the tours, and we thank you for your understanding. Vehicles, guides, hotels, restaurants, equipment, and services are the best-available in the area, but may not be up to the standards of those found on other excursions.
