Muscat, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 40-minute drive to the Grand Mosque. Upon arrival, take a guided visit inside this splendid house of worship. Built between 1995-2001, the Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in Oman and can accommodate up to 20,000 worshippers. The entire interior is panelled with off-white and dark grey marble. The ceilings are inspired by those of Omani forts, and a Swarovski crystal chandelier with gold-plated metalwork hangs down for a length of approximately 46 feet (about 14 metres).

Said Bin Taimur Mosque, Royal Opera House, Muttrah Vegetable Market, Al Lawatiya Mosque

Leaving the Grand Mosque, re-board your coach and head to the Said Bin Taimur Mosque. After an exterior photo stop here, drive to Sultan Qaboos Street, located in the nearby Shati Al-Qurm district of Muscat, for a guided visit to the Royal Opera House. Adorned with unique, contemporary Omani architecture, the Royal Opera House seats up to 1,100 patrons. Following your visit, transfer to the Muttrah Vegetable Market for a short visit, then stroll on over to the Al Lawatiya Mosque (Mosque of the Great Prophet). Located on the Muttrah Corniche, it was originally built in the 15th century and renovated several times since. The Al Lawatiya Mosque features a gorgeous blue dome, and minaret with Quranic scriptures.

Muttrah Souq

Next, a short walk brings you to the bustling Muttrah Souq. Located in the Corniche area, this colourful market boasts scores of traditional shops and is one of the most frequented spots in Muscat. During a stroll through the narrow alleys, experience the unique atmosphere and see many authentic items, including frankincense, exotic perfumes, gold and silver jewellery, handicrafts in copper and camel bone, Omani designer products, and antiques (items over 50 years olds cannot be exported). A visit here is a mind-boggling experience. Some free time is made available here for independent shopping and exploration.

Old Town, Al Alam Royal Palace

Leaving the Muttrah Souk, take a guided walking tour through the winding streets of the Old Town. The main attraction here is the Al Alam Royal Palace. Nestled between the Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts, the palace's fairy-tale façade of gold and blue pillars makes it one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. As the official estate of Oman's ruler, no inside visit is possible. However, the exterior view from the gate is quite impressive and you are welcome to take photos. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.
