Excursion Olga teresa farm tour at Punta Arenas
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
The Olga Teresa estancia was founded by French Irish immigrants in the early 20th century who established themselves as sheep farmers in the middle of the vast Patagonian pampas. The spirit of bygone days remains here, although the original farmhouse does not (it was destroyed by fire in 1993). Today the estancia provides the perfect venue for a unique insight into the lives and everyday activities of the locals.
Enjoy the activities on the ranch and view the nearby Palomares Mountains, home to an impressive colony of condors nesting in the upper reaches of caves. Observation of these mighty birds are few and far between, but those fortunate enough to participate in this excursion may get within a few feet. As the condors launch themselves into flight, one can almost feel the gust of wind generated by their huge wings. Condors are wild animals, and the Estancia Olga Teresa Condor Park is not a zoo; the birds do live in the Estancia, but they are in the wild and their natural environment. Please note that wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.
Upon arrival to the farm, be greeted by a charming family and taken on a tour that highlights various activities on the ranch. Chilean cowboys, or huasos, on horseback show their skills in rounding up young sheep, providing excellent photo opportunities by bringing the herd to a stop directly in front of the lucky visitor. Observe the amazing farm dog, who always entertains visitors with his speed and agility. A sheep shearing demonstration is also part of the activities.
Before lunch, a Pisco Sour cocktail is served with delicious baked empanadas, prior to a typical Patagonian barbecue luncheon. At the agreed time, transfer to the pier to re-join the ship.
