Ketchikan is one of the larger towns in the area, with much on offer including a quaint historic center of wooden sided buildings linked toghether by boardwalk, a variety of shops and restaurants, and all with an active salmon stream running right through the downtown. It is surrounded by the Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the US with 17 million acres of protected land.
Ketchikan is famous for its colorful totem poles, rainy skies, steep-as-San Francisco streets, and lush island setting. On today's tour delve into the heart of Ketchikan's rainforest on a scenic eco-tour at an exclusive reserved, led by and expert naturalist.
Begin your day at Herring Cove, following your naturalist guide along a nature trail through dense forest with tall stands of hemlock, spruce, and red cedar. Enjoy stops at picture-perfect viewing areas along the way.
At Eagle Creek, a protected estuary, keep an eye out for local wildlife, including bears and seals during salmon spawning season. Also watch for mink, marten, and Sitka black-tailed deer. After the walk in the forest visit the historic Herring Bay Lumber Company, the Alaska Raptor Center exhibition, and watch a native totem carver work before viewing his collection of work.

Please note: This excursion involves moderate walking (0.75 miles) on a trail that is relatively flat, combination of gravel and elevated boardwalk, with only a few inclines. Guests unable to walk the full trail can be transported separately to the other portions of the tour. Warm, layered clothing and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Wildlife sightings are common but not guaranteed.
