Excursion Sacred city of anuradhapura tour at Trincomalee
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Make a visit to Anuradhapura, the greatest monastic city of ancient Sri Lanka and the island's first capital. According to UNESCO, this sacred city was established around a cutting from the tree of enlightenment, the Buddha's fig tree, brought there in the 3rd century B.C. by Sanghamitta, the founder of an order of Buddhist nuns.
Serving as a Ceylonese political and religious capital that flourished for 1,300 years, Anuradhapura was abandoned after an invasion in 993. Before it collapsed it was royal capital for more than 100 Sri Lankan Kings and at its heights was home to thousands of monks from dozens of monasteries.
Arrive at the port and board a coach to make the two-hour drive to Anuradhapura. Explore the site's wonders, then transfer to a hotel for lunch. Depart via coach back to the port to return to the ship.
