Scenic drive to the Algarve's most western point, Cape St. Vincent. Explore the historical places related to the Portuguese Discoveries.

Named after the martyred St. Vincent, the cape is the site of numerous naval battles, including those between Admiral Rodney and Spanish in 1780, and Admiral Jervis and Admiral Nelson against the Spanish fleet in 1797. As you stand on the Algarve´s most western point, admire a steadfast lighthouse whose guiding beam safely directs hundreds of ships past the cape every year. What happened here six centuries ago led to the discovery of the world as we know it today. Before then only the bravest of Mediterranean sailors dared to venture beyond the " Pillars of Hercules " ( Strait of Gibraltar ), and none was brave enough to sail past the rugged cliffs which marked the end of the known world. All the changed in the 1400s, the world was opened up to discovery, exploration and settlement, Portugal and other countries went on to acquire overseas empires and great wealth. All this was due mainly to the foresight and determination of one man, Portugal´s scholarly Prince Henry.

Under the Moors, Lagos became an important trading post. After the Christians reconquered Lagos in 1241, the town was the favorite residence of Henry the Navigator. The town faces an easterly direction and is set around a sheltered - harbor with the Ponta da Piedade headland providing shelter to the largest beach on the western side of the Algarve, Meia Praia. The exposed cliffs of the Ponta da Piedade are regarded as the best natural feature of southern Portugal with grottos, arches and sea caves.
