Excursion Salvadorean acarajé experience tour at Salvador
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Discover the cultural and gastronomical influences of the Baianes people and their African origins in present-day Salvador de Bahia during this bespoke, half-day, excursion.
Salvador, Old Town, Municipal Square, Rio Branco Palace, Lower-City, Bay of All Saints
Your experience begins with a short drive to the Old Town. Stop at Municipal Square by the Rio Branco Palace, one of the oldest palaces in Brazil, for breath-taking panoramic views and photo opportunities of the lower-city and Bay of All Saints. After a photo stop here, take a guided stroll towards the Cross Monument en route to the Baianas Memorial, a gallery renowned for the great work of the Baianas do Acarajé Association in Salvador. It preserves the cultural origins of the Candomblé African religion, and, especially, the continuity of their traditional cooking that promoted the economic empowerment of women through the centuries.
Baianas Memorial, Meet Traditional Baianas Women, Acarajé Cooking Demonstration & Tasting
Upon arrival at the Baianas Memorial, prepare to immerse yourself in the rich legacy of Salvador de Bahia, due, in large part, to the strong African heritage of the Baianas in Bahia. Proceed to the kitchen and meet the traditional Baianas women, who present a cooking demonstration in the preparation of the tasty acarajé, the most popular fritter in Bahia and Brazil. After observing the cooking demonstration, learn about the history of this wonderful tradition and sample the acarajé.
Old Town, Narrow, Cobbled Streets, Colonial Townhouses, Pelourinho Largo
Next, take a guided stroll along the narrow, cobbled streets of the Old Town, lined with colonial townhouses painted in pastel shades. Your last stop is at Pelourinho Largo, the heart of the Old Town and site where enslaved Africans used to be publicly punished. Today, this location is reproduced in photos all over the world for its beauty and as a symbol of the black movement in Brazil; it is Salvador’s most popular postcard. At the conclusion of your excursion, return to the coach on-foot and commence the short drive back to the pier.
