Excursion St. paul de vence & maeght foundation tour at Cannes

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Visit the oldest and arguably one of the most exquisite villages in southeast France and explore the excellent examples of modern art at the Maeght Foundation Museum on this excursion that delights the senses.

Maeght Foundation Museum

Enjoy an approximate 45-minute scenic drive to the Maeght Foundation Museum, a beautiful 1964 structure situated on the hill above the village of St. Paul de Vence. The museum was created by Aimé Maeght and his wife Marguerite to pay tribute to modern artwork and welcomes 200,000 visitors per year. Designed by Catalan architect Josep Lluis Sert, the unique museum structure itself is like a sculpture that integrates the building into nature.

Walk the grounds and observe the conversation between nature and art, surrounded by exquisite greenery and a sculpture park with pieces by collaborating artists, including Joan Miró, presented thoughtfully and in homage to the rhythm of the seasons. Look for the mosaic on an outerwall by Pierre Tal-Coat, as well as Les Amoureux by Marc Chagall, which was installed on the bookshop wall. Tour the museum's impressive collection that includes stained glass, works in bronze, well-known paintings and lithographs displayed inside.

St. Paul de Vence

Walk down the hill (15 minutes) to the beautiful medieval village of St. Paul de Vence, draped in flowers over ancient stone walls and set perched atop rolling hills and offering a splendid panoramic view of the Mediterranean. Built mostly in the 17th century, this gracious and ancient place is built around elements as old as the 13th century, such as the Romanesque church along Place du Chateau square. Take a guided walking tour of this typical fortress town, walking the lovely Rue Grande to see the Grande Fountain, which served as the town's source of drinking water as far back as the 16th century.

Enjoy some free time on your own after the guided portion of your tour is over. Then it is time to re-board the coach for the approximately 45 minutes return drive to Cannes via the highway.
