Local Fishing Village, Cultural Practices

Depart the pier for the approximately 60-minutes scenic drive to a typical fishing village, which uses centuries old sustainable fishing methods. Upon arrival interact with the community leaders in a durbar. Witness libation pouring, the various styles of wearing the traditional cloth and their meanings and traditional entertainments in which you are encouraged to participate. You may seize this opportunity to learn more about traditional court etiquette. This visit will offer you an opportunity to interact with the local fisher folks.

Local Fishing Bay, Traditional Fishing Methods, Fishermen

Next, visit the local fish landing bay to interact with fishermen mending their fishing gear and preparing for the next expedition. Of interest are their fuel distribution system devised by the local fishermen and their leadership, and the centuries old sustainability measures upheld in Ghana’s coastal areas; Tuesdays are non-fishing days allowing the sea to rest and fish stock to be regenerated. The type of fishing nets used also have large holes and do not drag the ocean floor thereby allowing for fingerlings to nature thereby ensuring sustainability of fish stock.

Upon conclusion of this enriching experience, re-board your coach for the transfer back to Takoradi Port with a panoramic drive through the new Oil City.
