Excursion Tranquil hiroshima: mitaki temple & shukkei-en garden tour at Hiroshima

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Step into the serene heart of Hiroshima on this half-day journey, where nature, history, and quiet contemplation converge.

Mitaki Temple, Moss-covered Stone Paths

Your experience begins with a scenic drive from the pier to Mitaki Temple, a tranquil sanctuary nestled in the forested hills on the city's outskirts. Dating back to the early 9th century, Mitaki Temple is a hidden gem untouched by the devastation of the atomic bomb. Wander through moss-covered stone paths, past ancient lanterns and statues, and absorb the peaceful ambiance of this rarely visited spiritual retreat. The temple’s secluded location and timeless beauty offer a glimpse into Japan’s sacred past.

Shukkei-en Garden, Harmony of Nature

Next, continue to Shukkei-en Garden, a masterfully designed landscape that embodies the concept of “shrunken scenery.” Established in 1620, this classical Japanese garden invites you to stroll along winding paths that reveal miniature representations of valleys, mountains, and forests. Each turn offers a new perspective, with the central pond reflecting the harmony of nature and design. It’s a place of quiet elegance, perfect for reflection and leisurely exploration. Following your garden visit, enjoy a comfortable drive back to the ship, passing through Hiroshima’s residential and business districts.

Note

Please note: This tour involves a moderate to extensive amount of walking, covering approximately 1.9 miles (3 kilometers) over both paved and unpaved surfaces. Guests will encounter around 200 steps throughout the visit to Mitaki Temple and Shukkei-en Garden, as well as a few steps when boarding and disembarking the coach. As such, this experience is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those using a wheelchair. We recommend wearing lightweight, comfortable clothing and flat, closed-toe walking shoes to ensure ease and safety during the tour. Please be aware that, due to the popularity of the sites visited, some crowding may occur, particularly at Shukkei-en Garden. While credit cards are widely accepted, some smaller vendors may only accept Japanese yen. Guests are advised to exchange currency at the airport prior to embarkation to ensure convenience during the tour. The sequence of visits may vary to optimize the experience and accommodate local conditions. Local guides may speak with a strong accent, and we kindly ask for your patience and flexibility to fully enjoy the cultural richness of this journey.
