Excursion Walking and tasting in old quebec tour at Quebec City
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Among the highlights you’ll see today: Place-Royale, a historic square forming the heart of Lower Town, surrounded by handsome stone residences of affluent locals and home to North America’s oldest extant Catholic church. Around the corner is pedestrian-only Rue du Petit-Champlain, lined with quaint boutiques and outdoor cafés where a regular coterie of strolling musicians, jugglers, and buskers perform. Stop by the famous Petite Cabane sugar shack to sample one of their trademark products, maple toffee on snow, before catching a lift on the funicular from Lower Town to Upper Town.
Stacked on a hill overlooking the St. Lawrence River, the castle-like Château Frontenac is Québec’s signature landmark. It was here that Roosevelt, Churchill, and Canada’s William Mackenzie King conferred on Allied strategy during WWII. Just outside is Dufferin Terrace, a sprawling wooden walkway 200 ft above the water, built in 1838 and beloved ever since for its spectacular views of the river, the town of Lévis on the opposite shore, Île d’Orléans, and the Laurentians.
Continue taking in sights in Upper Town as you pass by Place D’Armes, Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, the Ursuline Convent, Seminary of Quebec, and the old walls. Return to Lower Town via the Côte de la Montagne to reach Taverne Louise restaurant, where you’ll spend a delightful 40 minutes tasting three types of wines accompanied by a cheese platter before the brief walk back to the ship.
