Excursion Essence of gran canaria tour at Las Palmas

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Take an approximate 45 minutes drive thru the Mountains of Teror, a charming town with whitewashed houses, red tiled roofs, onately carved balconies and charming patios hidden behind large wooden doors. Take in the ambiance as you stroll along the cobblestoned streets and have an inside visit of one of the most famouse churches in Gran Canaria, the "Basilica Nuestra Sra. del Pino". Outside, ten gargoyles stand guard on the sides of the church, inside, the main features are the vast Baroque altar and the richly clothed, wooden carved figure of the Virgin Mary. According to the legend, in 1481, a vision of the Virgin appeared in a pine tree to local shepherds. Since that time, the Basilica has played a very important role to the community. In 1914, Pope Pius XII proclaimed her patron saint of the island and the small town of Teror became the religious capital of the island.

Next, you'll have a photo stop opportunity at the Cathedral of Arucas. Looking at the church's imposing neo-Gothic style, stark white walls and vibrant stained glass windows, you may think that it was built centuries ago during the medieval age. You may be surprised that the church was made completely out of volcanic stone beginning in 1909 and was completed in 1977.

There are numerous landscaped parks and gardens in the city of Arucas, though undoubtedly the one most worth seeing is the 'Marquesa's Garden', with its extensive collection of Canarian and tropical plants. At this beautiful setting, you'll have some time to discover this garden on your own. Enjoy Canary Tapas in this relaxing paradise before your drive back to the pier.
