Excursion Markets of buenos aires tour at Buenos Aires

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Discover the legacy, charm and ambiance of the markets of Buenos Aires, and their famous locations around the city, during this panoramic, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Buenos Aires, La Boca, Caminito, Artists, Handicraft Market

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to La Boca. The most colourful barrio (neighbourhood) in Buenos Aires, it was settled and built by Italian immigrants along the Riachuelo, a sinuous waterway. Much of La Boca's colour emanates from the brightly-painted houses and corrugated metal roofs of the Caminito, a popular pedestrian walk and former railroad terminus that takes its name from a popular tango. During a stop at the Caminito, artists offer their pictures representing Caminito Street or typical tango scenes. At the end of the Caminito is a market offering handicrafts.

San Telmo, Free Time, Plaza Dorrego, Antique Shops

Next, re-board your coach and continue on to the barrio of San Telmo, an artist's quarter where bohemians find large spaces and low rents. San Telmo is the best-kept area and oldest district of Buenos Aires. Upon arrival, some free time is made available to stroll about Plaza Dorrego with its many antique shops, and browse for just the right souvenir. Leaving San Telmo, head to Recoleta, one of Buenos Aires' most fashionable districts.

Recoleta District, El Ateneo Bookshop, Refreshments

Upon arrival, stop by the El Ateneo Bookshop for a visit and refreshments. Having retained its original frescoed ceilings, ornate theatre boxes, elegant, rounded balconies, detailed trimmings, and plush red stage curtains, the interior of the building remains as stunning today as when it was first envisioned by its architects. In fact, it was ranked by The Guardian as the second-most beautiful bookshop in the world. Formerly a theatre and cinema, the building was subsequently renovated and converted into a book and music shop. Today, El Ateneo is a flagship store, and over a million people walk through its doors annually. Following your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.
