Excursion Marlborough wine and wings tour at Picton

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Visit the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, a world-class destination for the appreciation of historic aircraft. Not just for enthusiasts, the centre tells the story of aviation during two World Wars, the time in which the most intense period of aviation development took place.

Home to two exhibitions, the original-Knights of the Sky is film director Sir Peter Jackson's own collection of WWI aircraft and artefacts. The story of aviation in the Great War is brought to life in sensational sets by WingNut Films, some recreating actual incidents and featuring mannequins by Weta Workshop. The rare memorabilia are worthy of any national collection and range from beautifully crafted 'trench art' through to personal items belonging to the famous Red Baron himself. The rarity and beauty of the aircraft including a Curtiss MF Flying Boat, the Italian time capsule Caproni CA.22 or the colourful Fokker Triplanes can be appreciated by all, not just aviation enthusiasts.

Dangerous Skies is the new exhibition featuring aircraft from WWII including the world's only flyable Avro Anson Mk.1 and a Griffon-powered Spitfire. Women pilots feature more prominently in this exhibition, and in a world first (outside of Russia) the Battle of Stalingrad leaps off the pages of history in a truly thought-provoking cinematic experience.

No visit to Marlborough would be complete without tasting some of the region's world-famous wines at the Wine Station, located at the newly renovated Blenheim Railway Station heritage building. Sample from a selection of 80 premium Marlborough wines, hand-picked from across the region. Using state-of-the-art inert gas preservation, the Wine Emotion wine serving system prevents wine from being altered by oxygen and protects its flavour and aroma, whilst serving at the optimum temperature. A range of gourmet platters will be available to complement your wine tasting experience.
