Sept-Îles, Innu Culture
The Innu are millenary people with over 10 000 years of history. They are one of the most populous first nations in Québec. Before the Europeans' arrival on the continent, the Innu people were nomadic people. Living in tents made of animal skins they were relying on the land for sustenance in their activities of hunting and trapping. Rivers were their main pathways.
Shaputuan Museum, The Vieux-Poste
The Shaputuan Museum recounts the millennia-old history of a nomadic people in its ancestral land. The permanent exhibition, Innu utassi (Innu land) follows the Innu through the seasons and their annual life cycle. Ever dreamed of traveling back in time? Here, you can relive the past by visiting a unique site: The Vieux-Poste (Old Trading Post). Immerse yourself in 1842, at the time of the Hudson's Bay Company, in the center of the replica of the old trading post occupied successively by the French and English from 1673 to 1842. This fur trading post was the first European establishment in Sept-Îles. At first it served to trade fur with the Innu hunters. Later during its heyday, not only the fur was exported to European markets but also salmon from the Moisie River and oil from seals hunted in the Sept-Îles archipelago. You will discover in this place of meeting and trade, the daily life of the postmaster, woodsmen and Innu hunters. Several visits are available: trading post, permanent exhibition, Innu camp.
Jardins de l'Anse, Sept-Îles Innu Community of Uashat
Following the museum visits, a photo stop will be made at Jardins de l'Anse (Cove Gardens) observation tower and a drive through the Sept-Îles Innu community of Uashat will allow guests to discover and better understand the Innus' modern lifestyle.
The tour concludes back at the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking approximately 250 yards (229 metres) with some stairs to negotiate at the sites visited. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Dressing according to the weather; sturdy shoes no sandals, a windbreaker and appropriate outdoor clothing is recommended as Sept-Îles has a subarctic climate despite its location at around 50 degrees latitude. Transportation will be in a local school bus.
