Excursion Saltstraumen by land and sea tour at Bodoe
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Witness the realm of the European sea eagle and fury of the world's strongest tidal currents by land and sea during this memorable, half-day sightseeing excursion to Saltstraumen.
Bodø, RIB Boat-Ride and Sea Eagle Scouting
Depart the pier for the short drive to the rigid-inflatable boat (RIB) hut. Upon arrival, receive your gloves, hat, floating suit and safety briefing, then embark your RIB boat and visit the realm of the European sea eagle. The Bodø region has the largest colony of sea eagles in the world. Scout and observe this magnificent bird of prey in its own unequalled and majestic natural environment. In addition to exploring the close quarters of the sea eagle, take in spectacular panoramic vistas of the natural beauty that surrounds you, and learn about its geology and history during photo and geology stops.
Saltstraumen
Next, your RIB boat-ride continues on to Saltstraumen, a small strait which has one of the strongest tidal currents in the world. Up to 1.4-bilion cubic feet (about 400-million cubic metres) of seawater forces its way through an approximately 1.9-mile-long (about three-kilometre-long) and 490-foot-wide (about 150-metre-wide) strait every six hours, with water speeds reaching 25 mph (about 41 kilometres/hour). Vortices known as whirlpools, or maelstroms, up to approximately 33 feet (about ten metres) in diameter and 16 feet (about five metres) in depth are formed when the current is at its strongest. Saltstraumen has existed for up to 3,000 years.
Tidal Current, Whirlpools, Rønviksfjellet Viewpoint and Bodø
During a photo stop at Saltstraumen, observe the incredibly powerful tidal current and massive, swirling whirlpools created by it. The current also brings with it enormous amounts of krill, which attract an abundance of seabirds and fish, making it a popular spot for fishing and fishing competitions. Afterward, board the coach and proceed to the Rønviksfjellet Viewpoint, which offers stunning views overlooking Bodø. Following a photo stop here, commence the drive back to the pier.
Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 218 yards (about 200 metres), at times over gravel and natural surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and embark/disembark the RIB boat. This tour is not suitable for guests with a fear of tunnels, guests prone to seasickness, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe and waterproof walking shoes, and bring sun protection and a weatherproof jacket from the ship. Depending on the time in port, guests may not arrive at Saltstraumen at the peak tidal current time. Guests must be at least six years old to participate on this tour. Although frequently encountered on this type of tour, animal sightings are not guaranteed. The tour sequence may vary. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment. Guests with neck or back problems or pregnant woman should inform us in advance and when boarding the RIB, so that the RIB driver takes this into account.
