Excursion Spirit of kochi tour at Kochi
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Ancient culture and the present coexist in the center of Kochi City.
Depart from the pier and 30-minute drive to the first destination, Makino Botanical Garden located near the summit of Mt. Godaisan, this lovely park boasts 3,000 kinds of plants. Dedicated to Kochi-born Dr. Tomitaro Makino, the "Father of Japanese Botany,” the 14-acre garden forms a green oasis above the city, bay, and plains of rice fields.
After you enjoyed lunch, the tour goes to Kochi Castle, the city's most famed landmark, which dominates the view from any vantage point. Built in AD 1600, parts of the massive castle have burned down a few times, and it has undergone several restorations over the years, but it retains its original palace and the integrity of its architectural style. Don't miss the splendid Otemon Gate, remaining as originally constructed. Inside, many of the ancient rooms are closed to visitors, but you will find a small museum filled with cultural artifacts. The main tower provides jaw-dropping views of the whole city, making it well worth the climb to the top.
The last stop of this tour is Katsurahama Beach. It is ranked one of the 100 Best Beaches in Japan, Katsurahama is a crescent-shaped strand framed by rocky capes and Japanese pines. For centuries, the beach has been a popular site for moon-viewing parties. Enjoy free time to explore here. Just above the beach, a bronze monument and a small museum commemorate Sakamoto Ryoma -- the low-cast samurai who helped topple the Tokugawa Dynasty.
After strolling the beach, drive back to the pier.
