Excursion Vihaslahti bird tower and nature reserve tour at Kalajoki

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Explore Vihaslahti, part of the larger Vihas-Keihäslahti Nature Reserve, on this half-day (two to three hours) guided hiking adventure.

Embark from the pier and board your coach for the 30-minute drive to Vihaslahti, a habitat and migratory route for numerous bird species, which you can spot as they feed and nest in the area. You may also see the sheep grazing in the surrounding fields.

Learn about the migratory birds, the special characteristics of the Kalajoki sand dunes, and the natural surroundings particular to Finland as your guide leads the way. Hike until you come upon the Maristonpakat sand eskers (glaciation ridges) located just a stone's throw away. Climb the new wooden stairs to the top of the tower admire the views. (The distance between the dunes and the tower is about one and one-quarter miles one way.) Along the way, take a break by an open fire and enjoy a small snack.

Hike back to your coach for the return trip to the pier.
