Excursion Viking horseback riding at saltvík tour at Húsavík

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Discover the stunning landscapes of Iceland's magnificent north in a unique new way during this unforgettable, half-day excursion on horseback.

Húsavík, Saltvík, Horse Farm and Stables

Depart the pier for the short drive to the horse farm, and proceed to the stables. Upon arrival, receive your safety instructions, gear up and mount your purebred 'Viking' horse for a guided, approximately one-hour horseback riding journey through the stunning landscapes of Iceland's magnificent north. Marvel at your local surroundings as you ride from the shores up the hills above the horse farm.

Horseback-Riding Tour

In addition to the typical gaits of walk, trot, canter and gallop, experience riding the 'tölt', the special gate for which this horse is so famous. The tölt is a flowing, four-beat gait where the rider stretches down in the stirrup, sits back and enjoys the sensation of floating. Particularly suited to Iceland's glacial landscape, its secure, high steps allow the Icelandic horse to move easily over rough terrain that would stop other breeds in their tracks. Icelandic horses average approximately 52 inches-56 inches tall (about 13 hands-14 hands).

Return to Stables

Extremely sure-footed, keen and friendly, the horses are very beautiful, with long, shaggy manes and thick coats. A purebred descendant of its Viking ancestors, the Icelandic horse is a proud product of isolation and a thousand years of breeding. Famed for its gentle, friendly disposition and calm manner, they are a delight for anyone to ride. At the conclusion of your tour, return to the stables. Upon arrival, re-board your coach for the short drive back to the pier.
