Excursion Wheelchair accessible (durban) tour at Durban

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

This half-day tour weaves culture, history, and green tranquility into one elegant circuit—step into the color and devotion of Durban’s Hindu Temple, gain moving perspective at the 1860 Heritage Centre, and unwind amid towering trees and floral avenues in Africa’s oldest surviving botanical garden.

Durban Hindu Temple, Sri Vaithianatha Easwarar Alayam

Your journey begins at the pier, where you meet your guide and set off by air-conditioned accessible vehicle for a short city drive to the Durban Hindu Temple. During your visit, take in the vivid Dravidian-style architecture and richly adorned shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, as your guide explains the temple’s heritage and the long-standing Indian community that helped shape Durban’s identity.

1860 Heritage Centre

Another short transfer brings you to the 1860 Heritage Centre. Housed in a historic quarter, the Centre chronicles the arrival of Indian indentured labourers beginning in 1860 and their profound cultural, economic, and political contribution to KwaZulu-Natal. Photographs, artifacts, and personal narratives make this a compact yet powerful immersion in local history.

Durban Botanic Gardens

From here, a short hop delivers you to the Durban Botanic Gardens for about 1 hour among palm avenues, cycads, orchids, and serene lawns. Established in 1849, this museum is a calm counterpoint to the city’s bustle. Conclude with a short coastal-city drive back to the pier, carrying a fuller picture of Durban’s spiritual roots, immigrant story, and enduring botanical legacy.

Note

Please Note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking of approximately 0.6 miles (1.0 km) spread across level, mostly paved surfaces at the temple, heritage centre, and gardens. The vehicle used is wheelchair-accessible with ramp access; however, some historic areas may have thresholds or small steps and may require light assistance. Full time wheelchair users, are kindly requested to contact shoreconcierge@silversea.com in order to provide further details and determine if the tour is suitable for them. Guests will need to manage a few steps when boarding or disembarking the vehicle. At the temple, guests are customarily asked to remove shoes before entering principal prayer halls; modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is expected. The 1860 Heritage Centre is closed on weekends, and both the temple and the Centre may be closed on Sundays; if a venue is unavailable, the program will adjust while preserving overall content. Order of visits and timing may vary with traffic or operational conditions. Comfortable closed-toe shoes, a light layer for air-conditioned interiors, and sun protection for the gardens are recommended.
