Excursion Sigiriya rock fortress tour at Trincomalee

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Guests who would like an active hike can visit Sigiriya, Asia's best-preserved city center dating back to the first millennium. Known as the Rock Fortress, this rocky outcropping rises dramatically from the surrounding landscape with dramatic near-vertical walls of multi-colored stone, rising to a plateau-like summit that holds the vestiges of an ancient culture.

Sigiriya is considered by anthropologists as some kind of epicenter of an ancient and short-lived kingdom, Kassapa (late 400s CE). Its name is derived from a gateway built by the Kassapa king that looked like a lion; Sigiriya means the Lion Rock. In the 14th century the place was used as a Buddhist monastery and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, considered to be one of the best-preserved ancient urban planning.

Drive by coach through scenic roads to reach Sigiriya and rest up for an intense hike to the summit. Reach the top after one hour's climb and take in the incredible panoramic views available from the top. Upon completing your descent enjoy a well-earned lunch before making the return trip to the port.
