Excursion The english immigrants of coquimbo tour at Coquimbo

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Explore the heritage and legacy of English emigrants to Coquimbo during this picturesque and informative, half-day orientation tour. A unique area with deep rooted history to the city, the neighbourhood was called "English" due to the language spoken by its first dwellers. It quickly stood out as a result of the fine housing units built here with their balconies searching for a view of the sea.

Herradura Bay, Fisherman's Village and Church

Depart the pier for the scenic drive to Herradura Bay. Upon arrival, visit the old Fisherman's Village and Guayacán Church, a unique metal structure designed in the late-19th-century at the Eiffel factory in France and former home of the world's largest copper smelting plant.

English Cemetery and Sailor's Monument Viewpoint

Next, head to the English Cemetery, the final resting-place of English pioneers and sailors that arrived in the region during the mining boom of the 1820s. During your visit, view old gravestones and crosses brought over from Europe, then re-board your coach and drive to the Sailor's Monument Viewpoint. Upon arrival, ascend 70 steps to reach the top of the hill for wonderful panoramic vistas of La Herradura Bay and surrounds.

English Neighbourhood and Fort Lambert

After a photo stop here, your drive continues on towards the Plaza de Armas en route to a walking tour of the English neighbourhood. See restored antique homes with balconies and corridors erected during the mid-19th century, and feel the ambiance of a bygone era. Your last stop is at Fort Lambert for refreshments and splendid coastal views.

At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach for the short drive back to the pier, or depart the coach in the port area to browse the local handicraft market and return to the ship on your own.
