Excursion Thursday island discovery tour at Thursday Island

Upon arrival at Thursday Island you will have the opportunity to see the local artistry and their handcrafted items, providing you with a tangible connection to the local culture. After this you'll take a short walk to see artistic designs created by local artists adorn the community venue. This decoration will set the tone for the cultural experiences you're about to have and showcase the creative talents of the community.

A respected elder from the community will greet you and lead a discussion about the history, culture and more. This personalised insight will offer a deeper understanding of the island’s heritage, traditions and way of life. The opportunity for a Q&A session can further enhance your learning experience. The island dancers will perform traditional dances which are integral to conveying stories, legends and cultural values. This live performance will allow you to witness the expressive art of dance and story telling that has been passed down through generations. At the end of the presentation be treated with the beautiful sounds of the Gospel Choir.

View the ancient art of basket weaving giving you an insite into traditional techniques that are still used for creting functional items still used today. Throughout the tour, you'll encounter various artists selling their creations. This offers an opportunity to acquire unique artworks and crafts that service as a meaningful reminder of your visit.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of activity and walking is at guests own discretion; however, it not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those utilising a wheelchair. Comfortable, closed toe shoes with non-slip soles are recommended. Space is limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment. We recommend sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses as well.
