Excursion A taste of gotland tour at Visby

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Indulge your senses with the splendid natural beauty, history, and flavours of Gotland during this scenic, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Visby, Gotlandic Countryside, Tofta Lodge & Beach Resort, Tastings, Local Specialities, Beach

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive southward, through the beautiful countryside, en route to the Tofta Lodge & Beach Resort. The facility dates from the 1930s, when Swedes began frequenting seaside resorts for recreation. Visiting families lived, ate, and relaxed together just metres from the sandy beach. Today, Tofta Strandpensionat still has the charming atmosphere of the 1960s under the genuine care of the Jacobsson family, who warmly welcome your arrival at their resort. Afterward, proceed for delectable tastings of Gotlandic specialities, locally-sourced from nearby farms. Following your tastings, some free time is made available to take a stroll down to the beach and dip your toes in the water.

Gotlandic Countryside, Forests, Farmland, Meadows, Ansarve Sheep Farm, Shopping

Next, re-board your coach for a picturesque drive further on into the Gotlandic countryside, past forests, farmland, and meadows, before arriving at Ansarve, a delightful sheep farm that is home to about 150 ewes. Upon arrival, see the sheep and browse a selection of Gotlandic products made by Jenny Granlund, and her family and friends. Included are clothing and interior details made from wool, sheepskin, and yarn, all from their own sheep. Following your visit, re-board your coach and head to Visby’s Old Town.

Medieval Old Town, Narrow Streets, Alleyways, Town Wall, Warehouses, Church Ruins, Cathedral

Behind the town wall, the best-preserved medieval wall in northern Europe, the medieval stone city awaits your discovery. Upon arrival at the Old Town, take a guided stroll along the narrow streets and alleyways of the city centre. Since the end of the 19th century, the ruins of Visby have been protected as historical monuments. The uniqueness of Visby lies in the fact that the medieval part of the city is surrounded by the still-intact town wall, which was built in the 13th and early 14th centuries. Pass by medieval warehouses and church ruins, then visit the beautiful St. Mary’s Cathedral, which dates from the 12th to 14th centuries. At the conclusion of your city walk, re-board your coach for the short drive back to the pier.
