Excursion Ancient city of polonnaruwa tour at Trincomalee
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Visit the first city of the region, Polonnaruwa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dating back to the 11th century CE, this medieval capital was dominated by three successive kings. Though plundered and ravaged in later centuries, the place still holds evidence of this earlier grandeur. Explore the rectangle-shaped planned city, whose walls are still in place, along with ruins of palace buildings, dagobas, temples and other religious structures.
Arrive at the port and drive via coach (approximately 2.5 hours) to Polonnaruwa. Visit the on-site museum and proceed by tuk-tuk to the sacred city. There will be time to visit the quadrangle area, Rankot Vihara and Gal Vihara areas of this roving site.
Then take another tuk-tuk ride to a hotel for lunch before making the return trip to re-board the ship.
