Experience the rich history of Requena and its winemaking traditions during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion and wine tasting. Requena was born during the Iberian age. Romans were here too, but the Arabs were who gave the name to the town, originally named "Rakana", the strong, the self-confident. Later called Requena, it has become one of the biggest towns of the province of Valencia and has an area specially dedicated to vineyards and wine production with "denominacion de origen" D.O., meaning a prestigious product classification which is awarded to products that are produced in designated Spanish regions according to stringent production criteria. Pago de Tharsys Winery

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate one-hour drive to historic Requena, an area specially-dedicated to vineyards and wine production, for a visit to the Pago de Tharsys Winery. Upon arrival, take a guided tour of the winery and explore its culture of wines and cava. Founded in 1808, the original winery has a beautiful setting where you are invited to a wine tasting accompanied by local 'embutidos' consisting of Spanish salami and cured ham. You can also browse the fine selection of wines and cava for sale.


Requena

Next, re-board your coach and drive to the Old Quarter of Requena. During your visit, take a guided stroll through the small town quarter of La Villa. Along the way, see a collection of historic buildings situated in a walled Muslim area known as the Alcazaba, Medina or Arrabales.


Underground Cellar and Caves

Your final stop is a visit to the region's oldest cellar. Situated in underground caves beneath the Old Quarter, it was used as a shelter, wine cellar and even as a silo. A guided tour of this cellar offers a unique insight into the rich history of Requena.


Afterward, re-board your coach and commence the approximate 75-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.6 miles (about one kilometre), at times over cobblestone streets and steep inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 70 steps in the caves and winery. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Guests must be at least 21 years old to participate in tastings of alcoholic beverages. The tour sequence may vary.
