Old Town of Split & Diocletian’s Palace

On a guided walking tour, discover the ancient centerpiece of the Old Town of Split, the palace of Diocletian, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Born in nearby Salona (now Solin), Diocletian was a military leader who became emperor of Rome. His palace in Split was built in the early fourth century, and was intended for his retirement. Following the fall of the Roman Empire, the palace was divided into housing for the local populace. Today you can still marvel at the palace’s central courtyard, barrel-vaulted substructures, a sphinx carved from African granite, and much more.

Embark the bus for a short scenic drive to the Meštrovic Gallery Gardens and Kastelet. Set in stunning surroundings, with its beautiful gardens overlooking neighboring islands, this magnificent marble villa pays tribute to Croatia’s famous sculptor who grew from humble beginnings as a stone cutter’s apprentice, to become one of the 20th century’s most acclaimed artists. Upon visiting the Garden and following a short walk to the Kastelet – Crikvice part of this complex museum, you will find yourselves in this sacral and artistic ensemble formed on a ruined agricultural estate with the remains of the building of the Capogrosso family from the 16th century. An exploration of this sacral complex and the wooden works exhibited there will follow and you will be able to admire 28 reliefs and a crucifix, which Meštrovic worked on for 33 years.

Please note: This tour is available to guests with international flights departing after 3:30 p.m. from Split Airport (SPU). It involves a moderate amount of walking (approximately 1,600 yards), at times over uneven and cobblestone surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and up to 50 steps at the sites visited. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilize a wheelchair. Weather-appropriate, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection is recommended. The tour sequence may vary.
