Excursion Morlacco, where dalmatian history meets taste tour at Zadar
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Step inland from Zadar for an exclusive half-day cultural and culinary experience that reveals the flavors, stories, and resilience of Dalmatia.
Countryside Drive to the Velebit Mountain
Depart the pier for a scenic 45-minute drive through the picturesque Zadar countryside. Along the way, enjoy views of rolling hills, fertile plains, and the dramatic silhouette of the Velebit mountain, a natural barrier that shapes the climate and character of this region.
From Quarry to Gastronomy Museum
Once a bauxite quarry during the war in the former Yugoslavia, the site you are about to visit stood abandoned for years, its machinery silent and its purpose forgotten. Through the vision and dedication of a passionate local, it has been transformed into the Morlacco Open-Air Gastronomy Museum, a remarkable space celebrating Dalmatian heritage, flavors, and craftsmanship.
Exploring the Morlacco Heritage
Upon arrival, be warmly welcomed by your host before visiting the preserved 1985 bauxite mine. Here, a short film introduces you to the powerful “Bura” wind, a defining force in local life and food production. Continue your guided exploration through six thematic rooms showcasing first-class regional products, from cheeses and cured meats to oils, wines, and liqueurs all produced with time-honored traditions.
Tasting of Local Delicacies
Your guided tasting session offers an authentic introduction to Dalmatian flavors. Sample award-winning wines, homemade rakija (fruit brandy), aged Pag cheese and other more specialities prepared with care. As you enjoy these delicacies, learn how the Bura wind influences the taste, texture, and preservation of local foods.
Leisure Time and Return
After the tasting, take a moment to relax on the terrace, breathe in the scent of nearby lavender fields, or browse the on-site shop for local specialties. Then, re-board your coach for the return drive to Zadar, carrying with you the inspiring story of a place brought back to life and the flavors that define it.
