Excursion Serra verde express: spectacular rail journey tour at Paranagua

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Embark on one of the world's most celebrated railway adventures through Brazil's majestic Serra do Mar mountain range. This engineering marvel, built in 1885, threads through nearly 68 mi / 110 km of pristine Atlantic Rainforest – a UNESCO World Heritage biosphere – connecting the highland city of Curitiba to the historic coastal town of Morretes.

During your four-hour journey, you'll traverse 13 bridges, pass through 30 tunnels, and witness 41 viaducts spanning deep gorges. The train descends nearly 3,280 ft / 1,000 m through Brazil's largest preserved stretch of Atlantic Rainforest, offering breathtaking panoramas from specially designed observation cars. As you wind through the Serra do Mar State Park, expert guides share insights about this remarkable ecosystem, home to thousands of rare and endemic species.

Your journey culminates in Morretes, an enchanting 18th-century colonial town nestled along the Nhundiaquara River. Here, savor the region's signature dish, Barreado – a traditional slow-cooked meat stew that's been perfected over centuries. Wander the historic center's cobblestone streets, where perfectly preserved Portuguese architecture tells tales of Brazil's colonial past.
