Excursion Stappen island’s seabird life tour at Honningsvåg
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
The Gjesværstappan Nature Reserve is one of Europe's largest bird sanctuaries. Here along the steep, turf-covered cliffs of this protected archipelago off Magerøya Island, warm and cool water currents mingle – as do vast throngs of Nordic seabirds that gather here to breed. Embrace your inner naturalist on a stunning guided birdwatching adventure to witness the wonder of their abundance.
Your journey begins with a 45-minute motorcoach drive across the barrenly striking landscape of Magerøya. Keep your camera at hand to capture shots of the reindeer usually seen grazing along the way. Once at the picturesque fishing village of Gjesvær, switch to waterborne transport as we cruise out to the coast of the Stappen Islands – and an hour and a half of epic birdwatching.
Bring your best binoculars and stay alert as your boat trawls offshore of the islands’ bird cliffs. Among the species commonly sighted are puffins, cormorants, razorbills, guillemots, black-legged kittiwakes, European shags, and northern gannets. You could even witness a sea eagle swooping down to pluck a fish out of the water with their formidable talons. Of course, nature doesn’t play by our rules, so who you see on any given day cannot be guaranteed. But no matter what, you’ll breathe in plenty of refreshing sea air, admire the Stappen coastline's unspoiled beauty, and – maybe – add a few new species to your birding life list.
Once back on land, enjoy the terrestrial scenery as the coach makes its way back to Honningsvåg pier.
