Excursion The unique islands of giske & godøy tour at Alesund

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Embrace the scenic splendour of Ålesund and its nearby islands during this panoramic, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Ålesund

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive through Ålesund, a city built in the Art Nouveau style following a catastrophic fire in 1904. One of few Art Nouveau towns in Norway, Ålesund is home to an atmosphere and distinct character embraced by inhabitants and visitors alike. Whilst driving from the harbour through the Art Nouveau centre of the town, marvel at the amazing decorations and colourful facades.

Mount Aksla and Giske Island and Church

Afterward, re-board your coach for the drive up Mount Aksla, which rises high above the city centre and offers splendid panoramic views over the town, skerries and Sunnmøre Mountains. Leaving the city, your drive continues through some of the sub-sea tunnels connecting the islands with the mainland.

Next, proceed to the island of Giske, the seat of power during the Viking Age. Upon arrival, a visit is made to the 12th-century Giske Church, a Romanesque marble church built as a private chapel for the famous Giske family. The interior of the church was restored in 1756, and features a beautifully-carved pulpit and altar.

Godøy Island and Alnes Village and Lighthouse

Following your visit, head to the island of Godøy and charming village of Alnes. Here, you can take a stroll through the village or climb the lighthouse for some spectacular panoramic views. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking and standing for approximately 547 yards (about 500 metres), at times over uneven surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, and 87 steps for guests who opt to walk to the top of the lighthouse. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility, but is not wheelchair-accessible. Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. An interior visit of the Giske Church may not be possible if church services are in progress. The tour sequence may vary.
