Explore the renowned winemaking history and landmarks of Bordeaux during this picturesque, full-day sightseeing excursion.
Medoc Wine Chateau Road and Vineyards
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately two-hour drive to Bordeaux City, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. En route, proceed along the famous Route des Châteaux, the Medoc wine château road, which is located between the Gironde Estuary and Landes Forest, and offers magnificent views of vine-covered land as far as the eye can see. Medoc vineyards are orderly and well-kept almost to the point of fanaticism, and the region's famous châteaux produce divine wines that include Moulis, Listrac, Saint Julien, Saint Estèphe, Pauillac, and Margaux (with the celebrated château of the same name).
Free Time in Bordeaux City
Upon arrival in Bordeaux City, you are dropped off in the city centre by the Allées de Tourny, close to the legendary Grand Theatre. During your visit, enjoy a few hours of free time to explore your surrounds at your leisure. You can shop, visit landmarks and museums, or just stroll about and discover more about the history of the city.
Bordeaux City Highlights
Highlights of the city worthy of your consideration include the Place de la Bourse, Riverfront, Cailhau Gate, Grosse Cloche, Bordeaux Cathedral, and Gambetta Square. Don't miss the Opera House, also known as the 'Grand Theatre', one of the most beautiful 18th-century theatres in Europe. The pedestrian-friendly city centre and waterfront have cafes and restaurants from which to choose, for lunch at your own expense.
La Cité du Vin Museum
Bordeaux's newest highlight is a unique facility set within an evocative architectural design, and offers a unique view of wine that transcends the world and its history, cultures and civilizations. Your self-guided tour of this expansive museum's ten levels is punctuated by 20 themed spaces explaining the culture of wine in an immersive, interactive and sensorial setting. Afterward, proceed for a wine tasting in the approximately 115-foot-high (about 35-metre-high) Belvedere of La Cité du Vin, which offers a spectacular, 360° view of the city. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately two-hour drive back to the pier.
Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, and stairs and steps at the La Cité du Vin Museum. Walking in Bordeaux City is at the discretion of each guest. The museums are closed on Mondays. The Cathedral Saint-André is closed between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Mondays.
