Peace Memorial Park

Depart the pier and begin your exploration with a visit to Peace Memorial Park, created to commemorate the victims of the atomic bombing on August 9, 1945. The park features a tranquil memorial fountain, sculptures donated from around the world, and the towering Statue of Peace. At its heart burns a symbolic flame, intended to remain lit until nuclear weapons are eradicated.

Atomic Bomb Museum & Ground Zero

Next, proceed on foot to the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, which presents a compelling narrative of the events leading up to the bombing, its aftermath, and the global call for peace. Nearby, visit the Atomic Bomb Hypocentre, or Ground Zero, marked by a solemn monument at the epicenter of the blast.

Local Lunch, Urakami Cathedral (Drive-By View)

Re-board your coach and continue to a local restaurant where you’ll be treated to regional specialties and warm Japanese hospitality before continuing your journey. On the way drive past Urakami Cathedral, once the largest Catholic church in Asia, rebuilt after its destruction in the bombing.

 

Dejima Island

After lunch, rejoin your coach and head to Dejima Island, a former Dutch trading post that served as Japan’s sole window to the Western world for over two centuries. Explore the Dejima Museum of History, which offers insights into the daily lives of the Dutch residents and the unique trade relationship between Japan and the Netherlands.

Oura Catholic Church & Glover Garden

Continue by coach to Oura Catholic Church, the oldest wooden Gothic-style church in Japan, adorned with beautiful stained-glass windows. Then stroll through the adjacent Glover Garden, a hillside collection of Western-style residences from the Meiji era, offering panoramic views of Nagasaki Port.

After your visit, re-board your coach for the brief drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for over 2.5 miles (about 4.1 kilometre) and standing for over four hours. There are a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, 30 steps at the Peace Memorial Park, 70 steps at the Atomic Bomb Museum and Hypocentre, 20 steps at Dejima, 50 steps at the Oura Church and over 100 steps at the Glover Garden. The church and garden are located atop a hill. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing, and bring sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses from the ship. This tour includes sensitive material, including graphic pictures and displays of the atrocities of war. No flash light when you take photo. The tour sequence may vary.
