Excursion Larco herrera and lunch at huaca pucllana tour at Lima

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Enter the fascinating natural harbor of El Callao (pebble) in Callao Bay, a place with a rich cultural history. Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro first discovered Callao in 1537, after which the Spaniards began to loot ancient Incan and Peruvian gold and silver. Upon hearing of the rich treasures, other plunderers soon followed including the famous Sir Francis Drake. Finally, in 1823, revolutionary leader Simón Bolívar landed, and three years later, Peru was an independent nation even though Spain remained in control of the port until 1826. During the War of the Pacific (1881-1883), El Callao was a staging point for Chilean forces, which occupied the port. Despite a devastating tsunami in 1746 that obliterated the town, and a severe blow from an earthquake in 1940, El Callao has managed to expand and modernize into the busy port it is today.

Departing the pier, drive 40 minutes to your first destination, the Larco Herrera Museum. This museum is home to an extensive private collection of pre-Inca ceramics; it is probably the largest collection of its kind in the world. Founded in 1926, the Larco Museum showcases remarkable chronological galleries providing an excellent overview on 3,000 years of development of Peruvian pre- Columbian history. Located in a unique vice-royal mansion of the 18th century built over a 7th century pre-Columbian pyramid, the building is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Features the finest gold and silver collection from Ancient Peru and the famous erotic archaeological collection, one of the most visited Peruvian tourist attractions.

Before lunch, drive 40 minutes to visit the Huaca Pucllana ruins - the remains of the Lima culture. This ceremonial center developed in the central coast of Peru between 200 to 700 years AD. It is an adobe pyramid of seven platforms which has now been completely surrounded by the neighborhood of Miraflores. There is also evidence that the Wari culture (500 to 900 AD) used this site, and multiple tombs have been discovered here, including that of the "Lord of the Unkus", which was the first intact tomb to be uncovered here and contained three adult remains with burial shrouds, masks, and a sacrificed child.

After the tour, proceed to the Huaca Pucllana Restaurant, overlooking the Huaca Pucllana ruins. The owners of this contemporary Pervuvian restaurant are justifiably proud of their culinary philosophy, based around the use of a wide range of Peruvian ingredients in classic and contemporary recipes that satisfy the most demanding of palates. After this unique culinary experience return to Callao port (45-minute drive).
