Excursion Leconte wilderness & glacier fjord by jet boat tour at Wrangell
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Take a memorable boat ride towards LeConte Glacier, a 21-mile-long wonder located in a stunningly beautiful fjord. The glacier is extremely active, with regular calving events, and is famous for its "shooters" (massive submarine icebergs dramatically rising to the surface).
The fjord, where the glacier terminates, is surrounded by steep snow-capped mountains adorned with waterfalls. The glacier's calving events produce a phenomenal collection of icebergs and bergie bits, making it a great place for you to experience Alaska's glacier culture.
North America's southernmost tidewater glacier, LeConte is part of a massive glacial system that stretches 120 miles between the Stikine and the Whiting Rivers. Snow-covered peaks rise out of the fjord to heights of over 1,000 meters (4,000 feet), completely dominating the bay. Various waterfalls weave through the mountainsides and thunder into the fjord below.
Enjoy crossing the water by boat as you head to the glacier, traveling through the vast iceberg fields. Watch for harbor seals resting on the icy, aquamarine blue or snowy white icebergs. These seals take up residence in the bay each spring to give birth to their pups and raise their young. Keep a keen eye for mountain goats grazing on the razor edge paths along the stony mountainsides.
After your three and a half tour, disembark and make your way back to the ship.
