Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Discover Sasebo's rich artistic heritage on a tour dedicated to its finest local craftsmanship.

Mikawachi Ware Museum

Depart from the pier for an approximately 30-minute drive to the Mikawachi Ware Museum, where masterpieces from the Edo, Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras are beautifully displayed. Trace the evolution of Mikawachi ware—introduced from Korea in the early 16th century—and explore valuable shards that reflect its pre-porcelain history. Traditional tools and a detailed climbing-kiln model illuminate the techniques behind this refined craft.

Hirado Shozan Kiln

Continue with a short transfer to the Hirado Shozan Kiln, one of the region’s most celebrated traditional kilns. After a gentle uphill walk of approximately 200 meters, step into the workshop to observe artisans maintaining the meticulous standards of Mikawachi ware. Visit both the exhibition hall and the working facilities to appreciate the artistry up close.

Umegae Sake Brewery

Next, a short transfer takes you to the historic Umegae Sake Brewery, founded in 1787 and carefully preserved for more than two centuries. Enjoy a guided tour of the sake-making process, followed by a tasting of their refined brews. You’ll also have time to purchase premium sake as a memorable local souvenir. The tour ends with approximately 30-minute drive back to the ship.

Note

Please Note: This tour involves a minimal walking of approximately 0.6 meters (0.4 miles) of walking and about 50 steps, including a 0.2-meters (0.12-mile) uphill walk to reach the Hirado Shozan Kiln. It is not suitable for wheelchair users or guests with limited mobility, and accessible vehicles, lifts, or ramps are not available at the venues. The Mikawachi Ware Museum has elevators, though many areas of the tour feature slopes or uneven terrain. Photography is allowed at all sites, but no flash is permitted. Some shops may accept credit cards; availability may vary. Lightweight, comfortable clothing and flat, closed-toe walking shoes are strongly recommended. Japanese yen is required for any purchases: guests are advised to exchange money at the airport prior the cruise. Local Tour Guides tend to have a strong accent therefore we urge flexibility.
