Mondesa Township, Interaction with the Community and Refreshments

Mondesa Township was established in the early 1950's to provide housing for Owambo, Damara and Herero people working in Swakopmund. Just a few kilometers from the centre of Swakopmund another world appears. Bearing the picturesque name of Mondesa, this side of town is more African, more complex and, with the assistance of your local guide, will become much more personal. In a township where poverty, unemployment and low-income families live employment opportunities and international relationships between the Mondesa Township community and travellers provides opportunities for growth, friendship, support and understanding between the various cultures.

All interaction with the community is done in a non-intrusive manner respecting their privacy at all times. Learn some history, bridge the cultural gap through understanding, see a demonstration of mahango preparation, taste some unusual food and enjoy some entertainment.

Please be aware that a portion of each visitor fee goes back into the community.

At the end of this enriching experience, return to Walvis Bay.
