Montevideo - Uruguay's capital is a city of contrasts with its well conserved historical buildings on the one side and a lot of modern buildings on the other. The capital's Rambla (waterfront promenade), providing access to over 30km/18mi of coastline, is one of the main attributes of Montevideo and an unforgettable stroll for its inhabitants who frequently go there to drink 'mate'.
Your tour of Montevideo begins at Plaza Virgilio with the monument dedicated to the Fallen Soldiers of the Navy, and from which an excellent view of the city will offer a great spot for photographers. Keep an eye out for the Battle y Ordoñez Park with its famous soccer stadium. Our next photo stop will be at the Legislative Palace. This huge building is the pride of Uruguay. It was constructed between 1908 and 1925 with local marble consisting of 52 colours and 12 types of wood. Then pay a visit to the Mercado Agricola, a renovated old market hall that nowadays functions as a farmers' market. Gain an insight in the culinary customs of Uruguay and mingle with the locals here.
Afterwards, we will take you to Palacio Salvo, a building from 1928 that has become a symbol of Montevideo. Before the construction of the Palacio, Café La Giralda was situated here and was a meeting point for artists It is here that in 1917, over 100 years ago, Gerardo Matos Rodríguez first performed the tango "La Cumparsita" that with time has become the most famous and recognizable tango of all time. Visit the Museum La Cumparsita which is an impressive thematic place where you travel in time to the beginning of the 20th century, while sipping a glass of wine. After visiting the museum, you will climb some steps and at the very same Palacio Salvo Building, you will enjoy a Tango Class taught by a professional Tango couple.
