Excursion Naxos byzanthine history tour at Naxos

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Naxos proudly celebrates its deep connection to early Christianity, where the Byzantine Era left its unique traces even before the Iconoclastic period (roughly the century between 726-842).

Embark from the pier for the 30-minute drive from Naxos to the fertile olive grove of Tragea. Here, visit two Byzantine churches. Begin at the Virgin Mary Drossiani Church, a tiny place of worship built in the 6th century, which houses some of the oldest frescoes in Greece. Explore the characteristics of this unique Byzantine church that represents the period.

Next, drive to Halki, former capital of the island. Explore the local flavor of the village independently. Meet up with your guide again and take a 10-minute walk to the 11th century church of St. George Diasoreitis. Marvel at its unique byzantine architecture and splendid byzantine frescoes.

After your guided tour, walk back to the bus for the return drive to the Naxos port. On the way, listen as your guide talks about the local medieval history, as well as the remains of the ancient Apollonian temple dating from the Archaic Period. Also known as the "Portara," or Great Door, this enormous structure can be seen from the port.

Walk around the town of Naxos on your own and explore Apollo's site - landmark of Naxos - before return onboard.
