Excursion Old rauma walk exploration tour at Andalsnes
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Enjoy a half-day (3.5 hours) walking tour of Old Rauma, the best-preserved area of wooden houses in the northern countries and a UNESCO World Heritage site. See the historic buildings, most built after a great fire in the 17th century. This historical area is full of modern life, too; people live and work here every day.
Embark from the pier and board your coach for the short drive to Old Rauma. Experience the history and idyllic atmosphere as you follow your guide through the narrow streets of Old Rauma. Discover the beautiful late 15th century Church of the Holy Cross, built around an old Franciscan monastery. If there are no services or events, explore the architecture from the inside, too.
Head to Kirsti, a home museum that is an example of the building tradition in Rauma between 1700 and 1850. Learn about the previous owners throughout history who include sailors, workers and artisans. Next, visit Marela, a different kind of home museum built by a wealthy merchant and ship owner family. Observe the building's Neo-Renaissance style that was popular in the 19th century.
Walk to the Old Town Hall, built in 1776. Notice the layout of the two-story building with a clock tower, a very popular design in medieval towns. Explore the exhibits of objects associated with the history of Rauma, as well as an extensive bobbin lace collection at the Pits-Priia lace shop.
Stop by a local cafė for a coffee break with pastry before reboarding your coach for the return drive to the pier.
