Excursion Peel, the age of man tour at Isola di Man
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Departing the port take a scenic drive out of Port St Mary towards the charming and picturesque harbour of Peel.
The Isle of Man became a base for Vikings after their invasion around 798, especially Peel, a fort for timber, or pile, thus giving Peel its name.
At the end of Norse rule, great devastation came, and the early English Kings of Man began to lay the foundations of the historic Peel Castle that we see today. Some of the oldest parts of the castle date back to the fourteenth century.
On arrival to Peel, enjoy a walk through the beautiful seafront and past Peel Castle towards the House of Manannan.
Named after the island's mythological sea god, Manannan, the House of Manannan takes you on a journey through the island's rich Celtic, Viking & maritime history. In 1979, the ground that the museum stands on was used to house a replica of Odin's Raven, a 2/3 scale replica of the Gokstad ship, which was sailed from Trondheim to Peel, by a joint Manx and Norwegian crew. Today, the magnificent long boat is on display at the House of Manannan amongst many audios, historic replicas, and artefacts that this museum showcases.
Following your visit, enjoy some free time in Peel before returning to Port St Mary.
